This
was a monastery built in 1314 with funds donated by Cardinal Ricardo
Petroni, was a place designed for meditation and prayer.
In the XVI century the Certosa di Maggiano was partially destroyed in the
terrible war between Spain, headed by the Emperor Charles V, and France
under Enrico II.
This hotel, completely
renovated in January 2003, maintains intact the charm and class for which
it has become renowned worldwide.
All
of the rooms have been fully renovated, 14 of these with parquet floors
and bathrooms with tub and shower in marble.
Our Deluxe room, the "Green Room," deserves special mention for
its walls covered in hand-embroidered tapestries, antique dresser from the
epoch of Louis XVI, and a completely restored bathroom with hand-decorated
wall coverings and marble tub and shower.
The
grounds are vast and among the olive groves and vineyards one finds our
tennis court, helicopter landing, and a heated, open-air pool. Near the
pool there is also a small fitness room.
Breakfast is served in a historic kitchen, decorated in a rustic style
with age-old tree branches, and in its adjoining patio.
During the summer, restaurant service is available at the colonnaded porch
near the pool, for those who wish to dine casually. Dinner,
instead, depending upon the season, is either served in the small,
exquisite dining room, or under the arches of the central cloister. A
certain elegance in attire, even if informal, is requested.
A wide selection of Italian specialties is offered
according to season, and in accompaniment guests
will find a careful selection of Italian wines, particularly
Tuscan red wines.
